5 Plants That Will Attract Birds

Posted on June 7th, 2017

Having a luscious garden, a well-groomed lawn, and spectacular trees is a goal for many homeowners. However, if you’re looking to bring even more nature to your landscape, there’s one thing you need — wildlife. Rather than attracting pesky pests that can ruin your property, plant these specific plants to attract nothing but the nicest of birds.

  1. Bee Balm – With multiple shades of red and purple to choose from, bee balm is a beautiful flower you should consider planting. Not only is this flower a sight to see in its own right, it will also attract hummingbirds and a variety of butterflies. It can grow to roughly four feet tall and will begin flowering its nectar-filled blossoms by midsummer.
  2. Coreopsis – Another nectar-filled flower to attract hummingbirds and butterflies is the Coreopsis flower. This variety will also produce seeds that will attract the local sparrows, finches, and chickadees! Opt for the drought-tolerant species and plant it in direct sunlight for optimal growth.
  3. Yarrow – These tiny flowers grow in small bunches that will almost resemble a tiny bouquet. Many species of songbird prefer these flowers because of the seeds they produce. As an added bonus, hummingbirds and butterflies will also migrate toward these miniature flowers.
  4. Black-Eyed Susan – These miniature sunflower look alikes are a dream flower for most species of birds. Planting this species of flower in full sun (or sun with slight shade) will help attract a variety of birds including house finches, chickadees and American goldfinches.
  5. Pine – While you don’t want to plant pine trees right next to your garden, you can plant them in different areas of your property for a gorgeous evergreen tree. The leaves (needles) will remain on the tree with the same color year-round and are the perfect trees for birds to nest in. Plant these trees anytime between the spring and fall seasons.

For those who are one with Mother Nature, consider these flowers and plants to include on your property this season.
