3 of the Best Fall Gardening Tips

Posted on October 10th, 2017

One of the best times for gardening is during the fall, believe it or not! Despite what many may think, it’s the prominent time to get your property ready for the winter — but also prepare it for spring, which is only a few months away! If you’re looking for the best fall gardening practices then here are some great tips to follow:

Follow these fall gardening tips to get a crop of pumpkins like these next year!

Tip 1: Begin Planting Spring Bulbs

The most important step in fall gardening is to begin planting spring bulbs as early as possible. Since the soil is still warm (and not frozen), fall makes for the perfect season to start preparing your garden for spring. If you’re not sure which bulbs to plant, Daffodils and Hyacinths are the perfect fall-to-spring choice for your garden. Just think: the earlier you start your gardening, the more prepared your property will be when spring arrives!

Tip 2: Start a Winter Woodpile

As the weather continues to grow colder, it’s important to think about the unexpected before the first snowfall arrives. When pondering about the winter weather, you should always think about the possibility of losing power in your home — and this is a prime reason to start a woodpile! When starting a woodpile, it’s imperative to figure out where you’ll keep the wood initially. It’s best to find a spot that will be covered from the elements and at least twenty feet away from your home. You don’t want termites to become your new roommates. Once you find the perfect spot for your pile, start collecting the wood — but make sure it’s recycled, since that will leave less of a carbon footprint.

Tip 3: Rake Loose Leaves

This tip might be the most obvious, but it’s always important to rake up any loose leaves on your property. Whether they’re covering your lawn or the walkways, they can become hazardous (and a nuisance). If you let leaves sit on your lawn for a long period of time, then they will eventually kill your lawn — and you’ll have to continuously reseed. If you let leaves sit on your sidewalk and it rains, then it becomes a potential slipping hazard (and liability issue, too). The next time you’re thinking about skipping that raking session, reconsider your choice and locate your rake.
