How to Grow Herbs Indoors

Posted on November 9th, 2017

Fact: you can still garden throughout the winter. Despite what many may think, winter is the perfect time to continue gardening — especially if it’s an indoor herb garden! If you’re looking for a great hobby to partake in during the colder seasons, then here are some simple ways to grow herbs indoors:

Pick a Designated Space

Before you grow the most incredible indoor herb garden, it’s important to find an area to set up. Just like your typical outdoor garden, you have complete control over how large (or small) you’d like your herb garden to be. If you’re looking to have a large herb garden, then it’s best to start your garden in a rectangular planter on your kitchen counter or a large table. If you’re looking for a small herb garden, then choose a smaller rectangular planter — but place it in a sturdy, open spot just like the large garden.

Choose Your Herbs

When it comes to choosing which herbs to grow indoors, the possibilities are truly endless! From rosemary to basil, you can truly have as many (or little) herbs in your kitchen-based garden. However, when you do choose which herbs you’d like to grow, it’s important to see if they can be grown together under similar conditions, such as how much water and sunlight they will need during the growing process.

Purchase a Fluorescent Light

Believe it or not, fluorescent lights are the best when it comes to starting an indoor herb garden. Unlike the rays of the actual sun, a fluorescent light gives herbs the gentle sunlight they need — without overpowering and wilting your plants. When it comes to how long you should leave the light on, check on the package of seeds to see how many hours of sunlight the herbs will need to flourish successfully.

Supervise Your Herbs

The most important step in the process is to supervise your indoor herb garden. No, you aren’t required to sit in front of it all day and watch them — but to keep an eye out to see how they’re thriving. In addition to their exposure to the fluorescent light, it’s important to provide your herbs with the appropriate amount of water, and to keep the temperature consistent, too. Once you continue this routine on a daily basis, you’ll have fresh, indoor-grown herbs in no time!
