Aerate Your Yard – Does Your Yard Need to be Aerated?

Posted on June 7th, 2022

Aerate Your Yard. Following basic lawn care practices like watering, fertilizing, and mowing can help you achieve a beautiful lawn. But if your grass needs to be aerated these practices might have little to no effect. Adding more fertilizer and watering more will not solve the problem and can actually make it worse. Look for the signs and see if it’s time to aerate your lawn.

Aeration: What Is It?

Lawn aeration, or core aeration, pulls plugs of compacted soil out of your lawn and imporves the health and nutrient flow of your turf.

When your grass is deprived of water, nutrients, and air it can start to look thin or weak. Lawn plug aeration, or core aeration, involves using a machine that punctures the soil with small holes to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. This helps promote deep root growth and achieve a stronger, more beautiful lawn.

The number one reason for aerating is to relieve soil compaction. Compacted soil prevents air, water, and nutrients from reaching the roots. Too much thatch or organic matter buried under the grass can also deprive the roots of these essential elements and contribute to compaction.

Does Your Yard Need to be Aerated?

One of the most common questions homeowners have about lawn aeration is how to tell if your yard needs it. Your yard could benefit from aeration if it:

  • Experiences heavy traffic, such as kids or pets running around the yard.
  • Gets driven on by cars or construction equipment.
  • Doesn’t absorb water and instead runs off or pools in areas.
  • Feels spongy underfoot.

When Is The Best Time To Aerate?

Generally, the best time to aerate is during the growing season so the grass can heal faster and fill in any bare or thin areas. Aerate cool-season grasses in the early spring or fall and warm-season grasses in the late spring.

Overseeding is not to be confused with hydroseeding, which is used to establish new lawns from scratch. Overseeding is the process of applying grass seed over an already established lawn to make it thicker and boost its tolerance to certain diseases and pests.

The process of overseeding is usually done after aeration so the new seeds have a better chance to take root. The best time to overseed is in the autumn when the soil temperatures are warm but the air is cool.

Benefits of overseeding include:

  • Improve your lawn’s appearance
  • Boost resistance to pests and disease
  • Boost resistance to drought
  • Reduce erosion
