Winterize Your Yard Tools in 5 Easy Steps

Posted on December 2nd, 2015

It’s about that time of year when your yard work slows down for the winter, which means it’s time to pack away the outdoor power tools, like your lawn mower and trimmer. But, before you go and stash them in the shed for the season, here are five simple steps you should take to make sure they’re winterized properly so you can pick back up where you left off more easily in the spring.

1. Drain any remaining oil. Allowing oil to sit idle over the winter months makes way for a sticky situation come spring. Keep your engine clean and gunk-free by emptying oil into a pan first.

2. Replace and repair where necessary. Now is the time to inspect your power tools for missing or worn parts and replace them. Remember to replace the fuel filter on any gas-powered devices and the air filter on and motorized tools.

3. Perform spark plug maintenance. Normal use causes spark plugs to become dirty over time, so you must give them a good scrub down to keep them working properly. In some cases, you may even need to replace them spark plugs all-together.

4. Get rid of the gas. While preserving gasoline is an option, it’s best to just drain it completely. If you’ve got extra cans of gasoline lying around, pour them into your car’s gas tank and rinse the cans for use next year.

5. Give everything a good rinse. Before you pack your power tools away for the winter you’ll want to scrub them down to prevent dirt from hardening and becoming caked on during the cold months. Once you’re done, spray on some lubricant to keep your hinges and moving parts from rusting.
