3 Ways to Protect Your Yard this Winter

Posted on December 18th, 2015

Winter is right around the corner and so are some of the biggest snowstorms of the season. While some might be anxiously anticipating a hearty snowfall and hoping for a white Christmas, others are dreading the damaging effects that snow can have on their perfectly manicured lawns! If you’re a member of the latter, don’t worry. We’ve got three simple tips to help you protect your yard from winter weather.

Stay off the grass. While it may be tempting to cut across your lawn on the way into the house, when your yard is frozen it is more easily compromised, so try to stick to walkways instead. But, be sure to spread plenty of ice melt to prevent dangerous falls.

Keep snowmen to a minimum. What’s the first thing you and your kids will want to do on a snow day? Get out there and play in it of course! However, try to keep your snowman and igloo building to a minimum as compacting the snow on top of your lawn can cause a ton of extra pressure that can be damaging to your grass.

Remove snow and ice. If you see that large ice chunks have formed or snow has frozen over, it’s important to take action to try to remove them. If you live on the side of the street that receives the least sunlight, it’s also possible that your snow might take a longer time to melt on its own. Leaving heavy snow on your lawn for extended periods of time invites snow mold to take hold.
