How to Help Your Trees Survive the Winter

Posted on February 10th, 2016

The wintertime and the weather conditions that come with it can really do number on your landscaping — especially your trees and shrubs. Heavy snowfall built up on branches can cause trees to collapse and become damaged, and cold, dry air makes it difficult for your plants to sustain while dormant. Luckily, there are a few actions you can take now to help your trees make it through the winter unscathed.

Reinforce. Give your trees and shrubs a good look and brace any trunks or limbs that appear weak. Fortifying your trees with cables can help keep them protected from harsh winter weather.

Prune. Get rid of dead or damaged weight by pruning your trees and shrubs. Weeding out the branches that are not able to handle heavy snowfall from the start will prevent further damage.

Insulate. Blanketing the base of your trees with mulch can help keep their roots safe from the cold dry winter air. This means they’ll be better able to retain water and nutrients all dormant season long.

Watch. Make sure to check on your trees and shrubs every now and then, especially after heavy snow storms. Be diligent about removing heavy snow from limbs and reinforcing broken braces.
