With spring inches away, it’s time to think about what you would like to add to your property this year. Some people will decide that this year is the year to plant a new tree on the property. Whether a storm took your old one down or a previous one never even existed, there are things you should know before you go ahead and plant a tree.

Mature Size
When picking out the style of tree you want for your property, remember to keep in mind the size of the tree once it fully matures. Depending on where you’re planting the tree and what size your home is will decide how big of a tree to plant. If the tree is going near the back patio, opt for one with a mature size of 10 to 15 feet. If you’re looking for a front yard tree, opt for one with a mature size of 30 to 40 feet (as long as your home is one or two stories tall).

Growing Conditions
In order for a tree to grow and thrive in a specific environment, it must be able to adapt to the climate. Ordering trees from other parts of the country (or world) can oftentimes be a risk because there is no guarantee they will be able to healthily grow. To guarantee that your new tree will flourish like you expect it to, head down to your local nursery and choose from a local selection.

What Do You Want?
When you head down to your local nursery, be prepared with a list of characteristics you would like to see and a list of factors that affect can your choices.

  • Do you want a tree that grows upright or spreads outwards?
  • Which colors or species of flowers would you like to see bloom?
  • Should the tree be evergreen or deciduous each year?
  • Is there limited space on the property or are there limitations such as sidewalks, power lines, driveways, patios, etc.?

For those looking to plant a new tree on their property, there are certain things you should consider before picking out and planting a new one.
