How to Care for Your Lawn During a Drought

Posted on July 14th, 2017

Summertime is the season to show off your lawn’s most prestigious feature: a green smile. No, your lawn isn’t actually smiling, but the bright green hue is reminiscent of happiness. Unfortunately, sometimes summer leads to an unhappy lawn. Thanks to possible drought, the color can fade to a dark brown. Before you panic, check out these simple steps to save a drought induced lawn:

Step 1: Assess the Color

First and foremost, get on the ground and check the detail of your lawn’s color. If a lawn looks brown, it may not be dead — it could just be dormant, waiting for rain. A dormant lawn will have leaves of grass that are green on top, brown in the middle, and off-white at the roots. If a lawn is dead, the entire leaf of grass will be brown. Always check the status first to properly help your lawn.

Step 2: Brush and Puncture

For the next step, it’s essential to brush your lawn’s “hair” and puncture holes for more water absorption. First: run a de-thatcher over your lawn to remove any excess/dead debris that may be suffocating the lawn. Next: take an aerator and re-run over the entire lawn to create holes throughout — this will open up the soil to make room for more water absorption.

Step 3: Mow, Mow, Mow

A common mistake for a dormant/dead lawn is that people stop mowing the lawn. Continuing the mowing process regularly will make room for new growth, once your lawn is ready to replenish itself. Additionally: don’t clean up — keep all grass clipping on the lawn to act as seeds in the regrowth process. Once done: keep off the grass to prevent additional damage.

Aftermath:

When the drought ceases, don’t stop the TLC of your lawn — continue onward. In this stage of the game, it will be crucial to water your lawn on a daily basis, use the appropriate fertilizer, and eliminate weeds safely. Once these steps are completely done, you can return to your regularly scheduled lawn care routine.
