3 Common Gardening Mistakes

Posted on August 9th, 2017

Gardening is known as one of the world’s oldest and most notable hobbies. With endless choices of plants to choose from, the craft can be considered a major creative outlet for some. Although creating a garden is quite simple, the task of maintaining your garden may be a challenge — especially if it’s your first. Before you decide to pick up another hobby, here are some common gardening mistakes you should avoid:

Overwatering Your Plants

Although plants need a healthy amount of sunlight and water to maintain their youthful appearance, there is a chance you could be overwatering your plants. Always make sure you’re providing your plants with a generous dousing of water, and not letting them take a soapless bath. If you have potted plants, make sure there are holes at the bottom of the planter so excess water can drain out effectively.

Ruining With Pruning

Pruning will help keep a plant’s desired appearance and will also leave room for new growth. Although the common belief is to prune your foliage in the fall, it’s actually best to only prune the plant before that. Since the main objective of pruning is to encourage new growth, the plant will start to go dormant in the fall — since the summer sun will no longer be present. If anything, the fall should be the time to clean up loose foliage, and not trim it.

Crowded Flower Beds

Did you hate that feeling of being trapped in a crowded elevator? Plants know the feeling all too well and loathe it too. One of the biggest mistakes when gardening is placing plants too close to eacher in flower beds. Since plants begin to spread their roots underground, roots will begin to shoot into other flowers’ roots, causing a plant catastrophe. The next time you’re planning on planting an array of colorful flowers, make sure they’re planted with some breathing room between their other floral neighbors.
