Early lawn maintenance: Way before any advancements in lawn mowing and turf care were made, lawns in France were kept manicured with the help of grazing animals and regular old garden shears. Can you imagine cutting your entire lawn by hand? ..Neither can we.

The first lawn mower: In 1830 the idea to create the first lawn mowing machine was born. Englishman Edwin Bear Budding designed the first lawn mower based on an existing machine used to cut carpet evenly.

“Gentlemen will find using my machine an amusing … healthful exercise,” Budding had stated upon requesting a patent.

The reel mower hits the states: In 1868 the first reel-based lawn mower was introduced, originally powered by horse, but later redesigned by Elwood McGuire as a hand-held, man-powered push tool.

Fuel-powered lawn mowers: Thanks to Knud and Oscar Jacobsen, golf courses, parks and cemeteries could now be kept crisp, clean and green with the introduction of a gas-powered mower in 1921.

Lawn mowers become accessible: In 1938 Toro introduced an affordable, easy-to-store, power lawn mower designed with homeowners in mind. Now folks could keep their lawns manicured with less of a struggle.

From there, the advancements in lawn mowing technology took off, creating the lightweight, energy efficient garden tools we all know and love today.
