Keep Your Lawn Green: How to Choose the Right Irrigation System

Posted on June 12th, 2019

You put a lot of time into your lawn and garden, spent bundles on lawn care, flowers, trees, and shrubs. Now you need to maintain your investment. If you don’t have a method to water all of your plants, then you’re going to be in trouble, especially if you live in areas prone to drought. Having an irrigation system is crucial. You can spend as much or as little as you want on an irrigation system, depending on how much time you want to put into it.

Rain Catcher

A rain barrel, or rain catcher, is a great DIY irrigation system that requires very little maintenance and offers your lawn a free source of storable water.

For an eco-friendly idea, try utilizing a rain catching system. These can be as simple as a trash can or a professional one purchased from the store. A rain catch can be attached to your downspouts to feed water into them. A store-bought rain catcher will come with a spigot that you can attach a garden hose to. All you have to do is turn the spigot and let gravity water your plants.

Plastic Bottle Sprinkler

An irrigation system doesn’t get cheaper or easier than a plastic bottle. This is a fun and easy way to make a sprinkler that can water your yard or garden. All you need to do is attach a plastic bottle to a hose and punch in a bunch of holes. Different bottle sizes create different ranges and effects so experiment with them to find the right size for your area.

5 Gallon Bucket System

This is a very interesting and very cheap method of irrigating your garden plants. It actually could be free if you already have a 5 gallon bucket and an electric screwdriver or drill. All you need to do is drill several holes around the base of the bucket. Dig a hole in your garden and place the bucket inside. Don’t make it too deep or dirt and debris will fall in and clog the holes. Now plant up to four plants around the bucket. Finished! When it’s time to water your garden all you need to do is dump water and liquid fertilizer into the bucket and it will nourish all four plants without watering weeds.

Drip Irrigation

A drip irrigation system is a great way to make sure you're watering your plants and not watering the weeds.

Perfect for watering selected areas of your garden or potted plants, a drip irrigation system delivers the right amount of water to a targeted area without watering weeds. All you need is a simple garden hose with holes punched in it at the desired location. You can connect the hose to your outdoor faucet or a rain barrel/cistern.

Underground Irrigation System

For a more permanent and very effective way to water your lawn, shrubs, and trees, you may want to invest in an underground irrigation system. These systems are the most common irrigation methods used on residential properties. Professionals install the irrigation system for you which means you don’t have to do the heavy lifting. After it’s hooked up, set it on a timer so you never have to think about watering again. An automatic irrigation system will help maintain the health of your grass throughout the growing season.
